Long term food storage

Store Food Without a Fridge

Most long-term food never needed a fridge. The fridge is for fresh food. The shelf is for food that was dried, sealed, or canned. If the power is out, you cook from the shelf. You do not try to save the lettuce.

Fridge foods versus shelf foods when the power is out
Fridge food is a short clock. Shelf food is the plan.

The three conditions

Dry, dark, and cool. Moisture is the failure. A bag sealed damp grows mold. Heat in a garage ages rice faster than a closet. Light fades oil. A house cupboard beats a shed in summer.

While the power is out

Eat the fridge food first, on day one, if it is still cold. Then stop opening the door. The shelf is the rest of the week: rice, beans, oats, a can. Cook what you will finish. Leftovers do not sit out overnight.

Outage order: eat the cold food first, then the shelf
Day one from the fridge. After that, the shelf.

Who this is not for

This is not a canning course and not a generator size. If the outage is also a heat problem, that is a different page.
